Hi, I’m John Foti, photographer and co-owner of Foti Focus Photography, serving Central North Carolina.
My focus is sports and event photography—capturing the moments that happen once and are gone just as quickly.
Whether it’s the intensity of a close game, an athlete celebrating with their teammates, the emotion on the sideline, or the moments happening behind the scenes at an event, I want my photographs to tell the story of what it was like to actually be there.
More Than the Big Play
Sports photography is about much more than getting a sharp picture of someone with a ball.
I’m looking for the competition, intensity, emotion, and personality that make sports worth watching in the first place. The celebration after a point. The determination before the play. Teammates picking each other up. Coaches reacting from the sideline. The moments athletes and families may never see while they're happening.
Of course, I want the big play too.
My goal is to create images that athletes are proud to share today and that, years from now, remind them exactly what it felt like to compete.
From the Sidelines to the Event
While sports are a major part of what I photograph, that same approach carries over into events.
I enjoy documenting events as they naturally unfold rather than treating everything like a posed photograph. I’m always watching for the interactions, reactions, details, and candid moments that collectively tell the story of the day.
Whether I'm covering a sporting event, community gathering, corporate event, school function, or another special occasion, my goal is to provide a collection of images that captures more than who attended—it captures what happened and how it felt.
My Approach
I believe good photography starts with understanding what you're photographing.
With sports, that means anticipating the action rather than simply reacting to it. Knowing where the play is developing, recognizing the moments that matter, and being ready before they happen.
With events, it means paying attention to what's happening beyond the obvious—because sometimes the best photograph isn't the moment everyone is watching.
That's what I enjoy most about photography: finding those moments and preserving them. For me, that means being on the sideline, court, field, or wherever the story is happening.
